Prestigious recognition by the American Association of Physicists in Medicine

The results of the RIVER project, funded by KWF Dutch Cancer Society, have been honoured with the ‘Best in Physics (Therapy)’ label at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. The ‘Best in Physics’ label is awarded to only 15 out of more than 2,000 contributions at the meeting (five in each of the therapy, imaging and interdisciplinary categories).

The RIVER project is developing a method to measure the location of dose distribution in the patient during proton therapy within a fraction of a second. This allows action to be taken if the irradiation does not go according to plan. The intended benefit of this technique is that better treatment plans can be made, with less damage to healthy tissue and organs, without compromising the quality of treatment. This leads to fewer side effects from the treatment and a better quality of life for patients.

The recent results were obtained during experiments at the Particle Therapy Research Centre (PARTREC) and the Groningen Proton Therapy Centre, both at the University Medical Center Groningen. A summary can be found at https://lnkd.in/eRZ8aGBG .
